Ngày này, 42 năm trước, Trung Quốc xua quân tấn công sáu tỉnh phía Bắc Việt Nam. Cuộc chiến tranh chỉ kéo dài 29 ngày (từ ngày 17 tháng 2 đến ngày 16 tháng 3, 1979). Tuy nhiên, mức độ thiệt hại về nhân mạng khá lớn. Về tử vong, phía Trung Quốc có khoảng 25.000 người và phía Việt Nam khoảng 20.000 người. Trong số tử vong của Việt Nam, một số khá lớn là thường dân. Phương châm của Trung Quốc là giết sạch phá sạch. Họ giết bất cứ người Việt Nam nào họ gặp, kể cả người già, phụ nữ và trẻ em. Họ cho nổ tung mọi ngôi nhà. Ở đâu họ tràn qua ở đó thành bình địa.
Điều đáng buồn là, ở Việt Nam, chính quyền tìm mọi cách để cuộc chiến tranh ấy chìm vào quên lãng. Họ hiếm khi nhắc và cũng không muốn cho ai nhắc đến nó. Những buổi tưởng niệm của dân chúng đều bị họ cấm đoán. Tại sao? Lý do thật chua chát: Họ sợ Trung Quốc giận!

Tại sao Trung Quốc đánh Việt Nam năm 1979?
Hôm qua, 16 tháng 2, tôi nhầm là ngày 17 nên viết bài về cuộc chiến tranh biên giới với Trung Quốc vốn bắt đầu vào ngày 17. Hôm nay, đúng ngày, xin bàn tiếp một khía cạnh khác:
Tại sao Trung Quốc, nước từng viện trợ cho Việt Nam trên 20 tỉ đô la suốt cả cuộc chiến tranh trước 1975 lại quyết định tấn công Việt Nam?
Trung Quốc thường nêu lên bốn lý do chính: Một, đập tan giấc mộng bá quyền của Việt Nam ở Đông Nam Á; hai, trừng phạt Việt Nam về tội quấy phá ở vùng biên giới của hai nước; ba, trả thù việc Việt Nam đối xử tàn tệ đối với các Hoa kiều (trấn áp, tịch thu tài sản và xua đuổi họ ra khỏi nước); và bốn, dằn mặt việc Việt Nam ký hiệp ước liên minh với Liên Xô để mở rộng ảnh hưởng của Liên Xô ở Đông Nam Á.
Các nhà bình luận chính trị quốc tế nêu lên ba mục tiêu chính của Trung Quốc: Một, tấn công có giới hạn một số vùng đất dọc biên giới để trừng phạt Việt Nam; hai, tạo sức ép để Việt Nam phải rút quân khỏi Campuchia; và ba, để Việt Nam – và từ đó, các nước khác – hiểu là không thể tin cậy vào sự liên minh với Liên Xô, từ đó, có thể cắt đứt mối liên minh ấy để quay về với Trung Quốc.
Trung Quốc thành công hoàn toàn ở mục tiêu đầu, dĩ nhiên với một giá rất đắt về nhân mạng. Nhưng hai mục tiêu sau thì họ lại thất bại: Việt Nam không những không rút quân khỏi Campuchia mà còn đóng chiếm ở đó trên 10 năm; Việt Nam không những không bất mãn Liên Xô mà còn tiếp tục giữ liên minh chặt chẽ với Liên Xô đến tận lúc Liên Xô sụp đổ vào năm 1990.
Đó là chuyện năm 1979. Còn bây giờ, Trung Quốc chưa đánh, Việt Nam đã tự đầu hàng.
